Breadsong Bakery

Auburndale
**Must Try: Ham & Cheese Croissant**

Rumyana Gizdova has owned Breadsong Bakery for fourteen years and credits the supportive neighborhood for carrying the bakery through the pandemic. Like Newton's other indie bakeries, everything here is made from scratch, including breads, pies, cakes, cookies, and their signature croissants. Their best seller is ham & cheese, with their almond croissants and guava croissants popular as well. Breadsong is currently open just four days/week. Wed-Sat: 7-2

Rosenfeld's Bagels

**Must Try: Egg Poppy Bagel**

If you're looking for freshly made bagels in Newton, there's really only one place to go: Rosenfeld's. It has a vast offering of New York style bagels, with some unique options like its egg poppy bagel, which has its own following. Rosenfeld's doesn't stop at bagels--you can pick up their blended cream cheeses, lox, and other baked goods like challah, bubka, and black and white cookies. Wed-Fri: 7-5; Sat & Sun: 7-1.

Antoine's Pastry Shop

**Must Try: Cannoli**

This old school Italian bakery first opened its doors in 1954 and is a popular destination for it's scratch-made cannoli, Italian rum cake, tiramisu, and pretty much everything else its bakery staff cooks up. Open seven days a week, Antoine's kitchen is busy all night long with staff coming in as late as 11 PM and as early as 2 AM to keep up with the steady demand for its products. Mon-Sat: 7-6; Sun: 7-3 (1 PM in summer)

The Icing on the Cake

**Must Try: Cupcakes**

Except for the cupcakes, all of the cakes at this bakery are custom, with wedding cakes a specialty. On Fridays and Saturdays, cupcakes are available on a first come first served basis, and in-the--know locals stop in to pick up these perfectly executed crowd pleasers--with just the right cake:frosting ratio. The bakery is celebrating it's 37th birthday this year, and owner, Paula, points to talented bakers and superb customer service as setting The Icing on the Cake apart from other local bakeshops. Tues - Fri: 9-5; Sat: 10-2.

Blacker's Bakeshop

Newton Centre
**Must Try: Challah and Nut-free Rugelach**

If you're in the market for very strict kosher and nut-free/dairy-free options, look no further than Blacker's Bake Shop. This kosher bakery has been in its current location since 2014 and is proud of the tight community it has built, helping families celebrate milestones with traditional items that bring back childhood memories, as well as newer baked offerings, like chocolate crinkle cookies and the must-try "cake duds." Manager Becca says that Blacker's is known for its challah-- it's soft and flavorful, not too sweet or savory, and that it's nut-free rugelach is a baking feat. Tues-Fri: 10-3; Sun: 10-2. Closed Sat & Mon.

Lakon Paris Patisserie

**Must Try: French Butter Croissant**

The original location of this bakery is in Thailand, and Wellesley was supposed to be the second shop, until that space became unavailable at the beginning of the pandemic. Lucky for Newton, Lakon Paris Patisserie settled into its current digs at Walnut and Lincoln, and opened our eyes to the sheer bliss of French butter croissants. Lakon imports butter from France for it's signature treat, and the French butter croissant dough is the foundation of its other baked goods. Clearly, things are going well, because after opening during a pandemic, Lakon is expanding to another location in Coolidge Corner later this year. Mon & Tues: Closed; Wed - Fri: 7 3; Sat: 8-5; Sun: 8-3.

Flourhouse Bakery

**Must Try: Twice-baked Almond Croissants**

Michael Gurevich and Ania Zaroda, who also own Mike and Patty’s restaurants, opened Flourhouse Bakery in September of 2021. Tucked into an alleyway on Adams Street, Flourhouse serves up Mike & Patty's breakfast sandwiches, croissants, a variety of breads, and their iconic English muffins, which savvy customers buy in bulk to enjoy at home. In addition to its storefront, Flourhouse serves as the central kitchen for baking items served at Mike Patty's restaurants. While Flourhouse's goal is to be open 7 days a week currently its hours are Thurs-Sun: 8-1:30.

Country Desserts

West Newton
**Must Try: Muffins**

Located on well-trafficked Lexington Street between Newton and Waltham, you may just drive by this little bakery without noticing it--and that would be a big mistake. Since 1995, owner Nancy McCarthy's scratch-made muffins have earned her a reputation as Newton's must-stop muffin shop. We're also kind of in love with her individual serving chicken pot pies that are only available on Thursdays. Honestly, everything from this little bakery is top notch--from their rugelach, to lemon squares, anise cookies and more. Mon-Fri: 6:30-2; Sat: 6:30-1.

Galit's Cafe & Bakery

Newton Centre
**Must Try: Challah Bread & Chocolate Rugelach**

Since 2015, Newton resident Galit Grutman has been serving up scratch-baked Jewish and Israeli breads, cakes, and cookies in Newton Centre, using the best quality ingredients available. Galit's challah bread, made from olive oil, and chocolate rugelach, made with Israeli chocolate, are the bakery's most popular items. This bakery also offers a robust coffee service, weekly sandwich specials, and a friendly cafe for light noshes. Galit shares her love for baking with bakers of all ages through hands-on baking classes, where one can learn the art of making challah, latkes, donuts, cookies, and other sweet treats. Mon-Fri: 6:30-2; Sat: 6:30-1.

Bettina's Bakery

Newton Upper Falls
**Must Try: Conchas**

With their long histories as pastry chefs, Bettina Scemama and her partner Naun Rivera bake everything from scratch at Bettina's--including the bread for their sandwiches. Further setting Bettina's apart is their multicultural menu. Bettina is originally from Germany, Naun is Honduran, and they both trained in the US. Their love of their backgrounds and childhood foods yields a different kind of bakery where German, Latino, and American tastes come together. In addition to their regular bakery business and special occasion cakes, Bettina's also offers catering services. Mon-Fri: 7-3; Sat: 8-3.

Little L Bakery

**Must Try: Melon Pan**

Hearts were broken when Koko Bakery closed last year, but with Little L opening within the same space, and many of Koko's recipes, lovers of Japanese baked goods can once again breathe easy. It's hard to pick one item as a must try from this little bakery's extensive list of uncommon items. The green tea azuki scone? Corn and cheese roll? Baked lemon donut? Rich bread? We settled on the tasty, light melon pan, which is both crispy and fluffy and just the right amount of sweetness. Thurs & Fri: 7-3; Sat: 8-3
