White Lion Baking Company in Waban has opened our eyes to just how tasty and satisfying gluten-free and grain-free baked goods can be. This scratch-made bakery is a destination for those with special diets (Celiac Disease, Food Allergies, Paleo, Keto, Dairy-free and Vegan), while its baked goods made from wholesome, minimally processed, and organic ingredients, are a hit with even the most discriminating bakery-goers. Waban is White Lion’s second location—you may have visited their other bakery in Mashpee. Owner Liz Miles, a former pastry chef at Upstairs at the Pudding and Lumiere, is eager for the community to taste White Lion’s menu, and is offering free samples to “crawlers,” on both Friday and Saturday. 10% of the bakery’s proceeds during the Crawl will be donated to the Newton Food Pantry (Yay!) For those who love scratch-made, seasonal, freshly baked pies, Bettina’s Bakery Upper Falls is a must. Among their other diverse offerings, during the Crawl the bakery will have smaller sized apple, blueberry and pumpkin pies for sale and free samples of each. Bettina's will also offer $3 off any bakery purchases over $15 for Crawlers. Bettina's is the only eatery in Newton where German, Latino, and American tastes blend together, where customers enjoy conchas, cubanos, horchata, streuselkuchen, and schnitzel along with their turkey sandwiches and salads. Since 1995, owner Nancy McCarthy's scratch-made muffins have earned her a reputation as Newton's must-stop muffin shop. Free samples of heart-shaped, Icelandic waffles topped with whipped cream and jam are on tap at Kaffestugan on Saturday during the Bakery Crawl. Tucked into the Scandinavian Cultural Center in West Newton, this little bakery shop is only open on Saturdays, from 10 AM - 2 PM, when those in the know grab a cafe table and enjoy authentic and reasonably priced Scandinavian pastries and savory sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. Mandelkaka (almond cake), Pulla (cardamom braided bread), Korvapuusti (cinnamon buns), are just a few of the menu items. The little shop also has a selection of Scandinavian grocery items, like fresh loaves of cardamom bread, Oslo coffee beans, and cloudberry preserves to grab and go. All proceeds from Kaffestugan support the Scandinavian Cultural Center. During the Bakery Crawl the Center is holding an enchanted dwellings Huldufólk fairy walk.

Some, like Marion B., A Taste of France, bake in licensed commercial kitchens, delivering their creations to customers or pick up locations. Newton-based French baker Marion Bonte has a pick up at Fulfilled Goods, where in-the-know customers pre-order pastries and breads, picking them up on Fridays at Fulfilled Goods in Newtonville. During the Bakery Crawl stop by Fulfilled Goods for free samples of French pastries like madeleines, cannelés, and chocolate fondant bites. There will be limited quantities of pastries available for purchase, including a specially-priced $29 two jar combo of lemon madeleines and chocolate fondants (Usually $42).
