Get In Shape for Summer: Health, Wellness & Beauty
Acumotion
A Body in Motion...
Have a nagging pain, a pinch you can’t release, an injury that won’t heal, or physical ailment that’s keeping you sidelined? Struggling with insomnia, anxiety, digestion issues, or other internal health problems? Dan Shargorodsky of AcuMotion can help. AcuMotion’s mission is to help patients feel their best, while assisting their bodies in healing naturally and thoroughly. Dan takes a holistic and functional approach, employing a mix of traditional Chinese medicine practices—acupuncture, gua sha, cupping, and tai na massage— with western orthopedic practices, attacking the source of pain or impingement from its source. His focus is to heal your body naturally, increasing flexibility, mobility, and eliminating inflammation. A licensed acupuncturist, Dan’s background includes stretch therapy, body work, pain management, mobility training, nutrition, and personal training. AcuMotion just moved to a pristine 3-room studio at 1126 Beacon Street right below Citizens Bank in the Four Corners section in Newton.
Cardio High
5 Classes for $40
Cardio High is the only HIIT studio we know of in Newton. HIIT is short for “High Intensity Interval Training,” sounding way scarier than it is. A HIIT class incorporates several rounds of short high-intensity cardio bursts followed by brief periods of rest. A recent New York Times article named HIIT the form of exercise with the “greatest bang for the buck,” boosting one’s overall fitness and increasing calorie burn rate. Located in Auburndale, Cardio High specializes in low impact HIIT, taking the stress off knees and other joints. The studio offers personal heart rate monitors to easily track one’s level of exertion, calories burned, and fitness progress over time. Try a class for free--it'll definitely be the "high" point of your day!
Kink Pilates
Soul-Cleansing Pilates
Chances are if you live in or near Newton, and love Pilates, you’ve already heard about Kink Pilates. Not even open for a year, Kink’s Architectural Digest-worthy surroundings, top-notch instructors, and state-of-the-art reformers have made Kink greater Boston’s top destination for Pilates classes. And for something really novel, Kink’s “glow” classes — as in glow in the dark— offer a completely new Pilates experience. While not technically in Newton, Kink is right down the road in next-door Waltham, and offers such a welcoming environment and soul-cleansing experience, that it’s worth crossing town lines. Whether (like us) you’re brand new to Pilates or a seasoned pro, Kink’s no judgment studio helps you set and reach your fitness goals. And for those who prefer a private experience, there are individual reformer rooms for one-on-one lessons. Kink has two promotions for new clients: 3 group classes for $79 or an $85 intro private session.
Hustlestop
Beauty sans Bullsh★t
There’s a new salon in Newton, and it may just become your favorite spot to zip in for hair and nail services they call "smarter self-care." Hustlestop has a refreshing approach - a simple menu provides essential services and side-steps specialized ones. Cuts and Blow-Outs? Yes. Color and highlights? Absolutely. Balayage and Extensions? Not at Hustlestop. As a result, clients get in and out the door quickly, looking polished without spending a day (and a paycheck).
We also ❤️ Hustlestop’s cleaner approach to self-care. For hair care and color, they partner with Kevin Murphy – the brand known as Healthy Hair Care With A Conscience, offering cleaner formulas and an eco-friendly focus. For nails, they offer “natural” services only (so no gels, acrylics, or dips), partnering with Dazzle Dry – a high-performing lacquer that works like a traditional polish.
Located at 400 Homer Street, near the Newton Free Library. Currently open Wed., Thurs., and Sat., with special hours on request (and available for private group bookings). Lots of parking. Book online!
Hair By Hanna
Uptown Hair; Neighborhood Prices
How has Hair by Hanna maintained a robust business for 25+ years? By delivering upscale hair services at neighborhood prices. The result? A steady stream of new and returning clients who walk out of the salon with high-end hair, and their wallets intact. For owner Hanna BenShabbat it all starts with healthy hair. She won’t push products or processes that are unnecessary or damage hair. Instead, Hanna helps clients reach their hair goals. Whether it’s going grey “naturally;” obtaining frizz-free, shiny hair using a protein smoothing system; getting an on-trend hair cut; or quickly covering grey roots before an event, Hanna does it all. She’s also a perm expert—offering clients curly, loose, or wavy beach hair. Even better? Hanna takes walk-ins, last minute appointments, and she works expertly and quickly. Hair by Hanna also carries in-demand products which you can’t find locally, including Controlled Chaos’ curl crème, of Shark Tank fame. Oh, and as a licensed beautician, Hanna provides skincare and will soon offer microblading. For July Hanna has a $120 color and cut special. Open 10-5 Mon-Thurs; 10-2 on Fri; and Sun by appointment.
Motion Study
Welcoming Barre Classes
Those interested in increasing their fitness as we head into the warmer months, may want to look into Motion Study, a Barre studio in Newton Highlands, which also offers vinyasa and cardio classes. Owned and operated by two long-time Barre instructors, Denise Crowe and Julie Chrzan, classes are challenging, yet manageable, and offer a welcome respite from everyday stresses. Designed for students of all levels, Motion Study teachers offer each student hands-on adjustment, integrating personal training into every session. Also, compared to other exercise studios in Newton, Motion Study’s classes take place in their pristine, air-conditioned studio, and are very reasonably priced, with a live-stream option as well. New guests can purchase a 3-pack of studio classes for $60, try different classes, and get a sense of what it feels like to be part of the Motion Study community.
Figurella
Fitness, Italian Style
Those trying to reach their fitness goals but frustrated with traditional approaches, may want to look into Figurella, and experience its new approach to achieving a healthy body. Figurella isn't quite an exercise studio. It's definitely not a spa. And we wouldn't call it a traditional weight loss center, either. More like a woman's body design center, Figurella's clients are toned, healthy, and achieving their personal body goals. With roots in Italy, Figurella's pristine studio, located on Union Street in Newton Centre, uses a science-based approach to eliminate fat, including diet, exercise, and restoration. Interested? There's a starter package for $99 with a private consultation and 3 sessions, with personalized workouts with a trainer, detox baths, and nutrition tips.
Whole Beauty Salon & Day Spa
One Stop Health & Beauty
There are lots of salons and med spas in Newton, but Whole Beauty Salon & Day Spa is the only one we’ve found offering eyelash extensions, hair and nail services, AND med spa services—like non-invasive facelifts, Botox , fillers, micro-needling, and endosphere body contouring. Owner Olga Kwasniewski, originally from Uzbekistan, offers leading edge, European-style services, combining innovative technologies with a whole body approach. This Newton Centre salon focuses on the most effective, safe, and least invasive treatments, improving the quality and appearance of clients’ skin, nails and body. At Whole Beauty information and education is paramount—processes are explained from why they work, benefits, and how to maintain results at home. This approach resonates with a diverse clientele—from transplanted Europeans, to teenagers clearing up acne without accutane, to men who will only have facials at Whole Beauty.
The salon made news during the early days of the pandemic with free haircuts and facials to weary first-responders—many of whom are still clients. Open 7 days/week.
